Essentially, this process takes similar ray-traced tasks and groups them together for faster execution through the pipeline. The last notable change that Nvidia made to its third-gen RT hardware is to implement a new technique for reordering ray-traced workloads. We haven’t noticed a difference, as of yet, though, and this isn’t something we can be sure about. Given the visual benefits of ray-tracing, we’re under the impression that the benefits of using this technology outweigh its cons. For this reason, the Displaced Micro-Mesh Engine is not used for rasterized graphics workloads, as the BVH issue is less pronounced there. Nvidia noted a lightweight deformation in images, which likely results from the data compression. The Displaced Micro-Mesh Engine works to accelerate the creation of BVHs and reduce their memory footprint, but there is a cost to using this service. This is an issue that apparently will persist as ray-traced workloads increase. Nvidia notes that a hundred-fold increase in geometry could result in a parallel hundred-fold increase in BVH build time, which would result in a similar hundred-fold increase in the amount of memory used. BVHs, used for geometrically complex objects, are costly elements in graphics workloads. The second new piece of hardware is the equally impressive-sounding Displaced Micro-Mesh Engine, which is designed to reduce the performance penalty associated with building and storing bounding volume hierarchies (BVH). Overall, Nvidia has reported a doubling of scene-traversal performance in applications with alpha-tested geometry using the Opacity Micromap Engine. In this example, the workload sent to the shaders is reduced by more than half, but naturally this would vary depending on the image in question. #1080p shadow of the tomb raider codeThis work is handed off to the shader cores to run code and determine what happens with the rest of the image. On all of the brown and blue tiles, however, it’s a mixture, and this requires more calculations. The green tiles, meanwhile, are fully opaque, and the GPU knows that it needs to do processing related to lighting on these sections. White tiles in the map are marked as transparent, and no lighting effects need to be applied to those bits. With an Ampere RT core, the entire image would need to be processed to determine what happens with the Opacity Micromap Engine, this workload is reduced. The GPU needs to determine how a ray-traced ray of light affects the image. On both sides is placed an image of a leaf. Nvidia used the below diagram to illustrate how this works. Two new pieces of fixed-function hardware inside the Ada Lovelace RT cores work to accelerate ray-tracing performance and decrease the workload placed on other components, such as the CUDA cores.įirst is what Nvidia calls an Opacity Micromap Engine, which alpha-tests geometry. But the bulk of the processing resources exist inside of the SMs.Īrchitecturally speaking, the most significant improvements that Nvidia made to the Ada Lovelace architecture are in the RT cores. These include the ROPs, the L2 cache, the memory controllers, media encoders and decoders, and miscellaneous other components. Other important hardware resources exist on the GPU die outside of the SMs. For now, nothing else even comes close to it, so long as you are playing relatively modern games at 4K resolution. The card's $1,599 price may seem extreme, but so is this mega-card. The performance gains inherent in Lovelace are clear to see in Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition: They are enormous, and if this isn’t the company’s single greatest generational performance jump, it's close. But having now tested and reviewed our first new card based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, we can say it might well be true. #1080p shadow of the tomb raider upgradeSo, when we hear Nvidia say something like “Ada (Lovelace) provides the largest generational performance upgrade in the history of Nvidia,” we sit up and pay attention.ĭetermining the absolute accuracy of that statement is tricky without carefully combing through old product offerings through the decades. Its first graphics accelerator wasn’t a major success, but that card was very much an outlier-far more often, its new graphics cards (Opens in a new window) offer big performance gains or push forward the industry as a whole. #1080p shadow of the tomb raider PcNvidia has been a driving force in the PC graphics industry almost from the company’s founding. #1080p shadow of the tomb raider how to
